Two generations of Morpeth Butchery farmers shaking hands in a Hunter Valley paddock

From Our Paddocks to Your Plate: The Hunter Natural Story

Most people don't think about where their meat comes from. We don't blame them - for a long time, the answer was a supermarket fridge, and that's as far as it went. But the answer used to be different, and we think it should be different again.

Two businesses, one family

Hunter Natural is our family's grass-fed beef and lamb farm in the Upper Hunter Valley. Morpeth Butchery is our shop in the Lower Hunter, where we process and sell that meat - alongside free-range pork and chicken from local producers we trust, and a curated range of pantry items, smallgoods, and house-cured products.

We bought Morpeth Butchery in February 2014 with one main goal: to bring our farm's grass-fed beef and lamb directly to the people of the lower Hunter. Cutting out the middle, knowing every step of the journey, and being able to look our customers in the eye and tell them exactly where the meat came from.

Why grass-fed matters to us

Our cattle and sheep eat grass. That's it. They roam our paddocks year-round - no feedlots, no grain finishing, no growth hormones, no preventative antibiotics. The animals grow at their natural pace, the meat develops the kind of depth of flavour that only time can give it, and the land stays healthy under their hooves.

Grass-fed isn't just a label for us. It's a longer cycle, more work, and animals raised the way they've been raised for centuries.

What you'll find on the shelf

The beef and lamb in our cabinet is grass-fed Hunter Natural - or, when supply needs supplementing, premium organic beef from Australian abattoirs we know personally. Our pork and chicken come from free-range producers we've worked with for years. Our smallgoods - bacon, hams, frankfurts, devon, kransky, beer sticks - are made on-site, the proper way, in small batches.

Behind the counter

Walk into the shop and you'll find real butchers cutting meat the way you ask. We can break down a whole side of beef, French-trim a rack of lamb, butterfly a chicken, or grind mince to your preferred coarseness. If you've got a recipe in mind and don't know what cut to ask for, just describe it - we'll figure it out.

Click and collect online, or walk in any day except Sunday. Either way, we'll see you soon.
